In the West, assumptions about Afghanistan too often seem premised on the idea that the Taliban are "men in caves," raising questions about why thousands of international troops cannot quickly defeat them.

Civilian deaths in Afghan battle

US-led troops have "inadvertently" killed four women and a child in an exchange of fire in Afghanistan.
The civilians were killed on Thursday when troops went to an area of central Ghazni province, about 100km south of the capital, to find a Taliban fighter alleged to be co-ordinating foreign fighters, according to statement from the coalition.
